Anti Muslim rhetoric being normalized due to the actions of a band of extremists has led to a political environment that has created the normalization of ” thuggery” in the name of the law. However the individuals involved in this specific attack were acting outside the parameters of the law. The united states was founded upon the principles of religious freedom . Yet our nation unfortunately has a long established history of persecuting those outside of its accepted Judeo- Christian heritage. This happened during 17th Century Salem. It occured with slaves from West India and led to the slaughter of innocent people. Puritans were also infamous for persecuting Quakers whom they perceived as ” heretics” as well as Native Americans whom they referred to as ” savages”. This line of thinking of ” othering” outside of the accepted ” norm” is not unlike much of the rhetoric we hear from the white house at this point. It casts a dark shadow not only over our nations past but over its present circumstances
To ignore the plight of the marginalized including our Muslim neighbors is to ignore Jesus command ” inasmuch as you have done to the least of these my brethren so have you done unto me.” We cannot harbor hatred towards anyone in our hearts and proclaim to ” walk in love”.
